Hi Everybody... Robin here.

Remember all of the fun canvases at recent The Nimble Needle-Atlanta event?

"Frog eat Frog" by Charley Harper

and... Charlsie W. selected the Charley Harper canvas, Frog eat Frog.

Here's the "beauty shot" with all of the threads. Won't this be fun to stitch?

We have plans for Beads and Swarovski crystals, too.

Charlsie just recently finished stitching another Charley Harper called Pelican Pantry. The whimsical titles are brilliant.

What a wonderful job! Thanks for sharing, Charlsie.

Here's an "open" stitch to have in your arsenal.

I call it Bubble & Grid. Guess my titles aren't very Charley Harper-esque. LOL.

Well, the next blog is about my upcoming teaching/travel destination: Creative Stitches and Gifts in Dallas, TX with lots of new stitch guides.

Until then... HUGS, Robin

Hi Everybody... Robin here...

Cue the Willie Nelson music...

On the road again... Just can't wait to get on the road again... ♫

This time I am headed to Big D (Dallas, TX) for some Canvas Enhancement classes on June 6 - 8, 2014 at Creative Stitches and Gifts.

Twelve ladies submitted the following canvases for me to write stitch guides. What a fun group from our industry's popular designers including Melissa Shirley Designs, Maggie Co, Tapestry Fair, Zecca and Kelly Clark Needlepoint.

Hi Everybody... Robin here...

Have you seen the new Jolly Nutcracker Ornaments from dede Ogden distributed by Fleur de Paris ?

They are based on her Jolly Nutcracker Collection Pillow...

and large Christmas Jolly Nutcracker CollectionStocking.

Jolly Nutcracker Collection Stocking (ED-4004)

You may remember I wrote the stitch guide for the Jolly Nutcracker Collection Pillow and it was stitched for a class event at 3 Kittens Needle Arts in MN.

You can refresh your memory on the blog with this link: Jolly Nutcrackers by dede Ogden and Robin King.

After many requests, dede decided to paint individual Jolly Nutcrackers and make them ornament size. Each are on 18 mesh and are about 4" x 5".

Then, dede called me and asked if I would write a stitch guide for each of the new Nutcrackers. How cool was that! Of course, I said yes... and now each Jolly Nutcracker in the series comes with my stitch guide. Sweet!

Hi Everybody... Robin here.

I'm back home from teaching at Creative Stitches and Gifts in Dallas, TX. What a grand time I had!

My flight from Memphis to Dallas was smooth and uneventful. The thunderstorms rolled through before my departure and were never a factor.

Valerie picked me up from the airport and brought me to the shop which was open on Thursday evenings. I met a nice group of ladies; each stitching on various projects.

Let me tell you about Creative Stitches and Gifts. It is a very large store. I don't know the exact square footage, but I can say so far (in my teaching travels) it wins the trophy for being the largest shop. Many threads, accessories, beads, canvases, etc. Truly a stitcher's/teacher's dream destination.

I was intrigued with their canvas taping machine and had to take a photo for everyone to see. Slide the canvas edge along a guide and the tape is applied evenly on both sides. Very cool.

I was spoiled with my hotel accommodations... and my nice welcome gifts.

all of this for me?
Very tasty!

Friday, Saturday and Sunday were class days. The class room was self-contained with comfortable chairs and roomy tables. We were in our own little world of creative energy. The guides and thread kits were ready and everyone dived in. Stitches were developed and questions were answered. Techniques were explained. What a wonderful event.

Here are some photos from my time at Creative Stitches and Gifts and the talented stitchers who made all this possible.

Needless to say, what a nice collection of canvases, and yes, each of these stitch guides are now available. Just send me an email for inquiries... (creativecats@comcast.net).

The lunches were collaborations from Valerie and some of the local attendees. Home cooking is such a nice treat. Alice Hildreth made a delicious Cold Chicken Cabbage Salad. She gave me permission to share her recipe with you. I can't wait to make it.

Cold Chicken Cabbage Salad

Main Ingredients:
3 to 4 Cooked Chicken Breasts
2 TBSP Sesame Seeds
1/2 Head Cabbage Shredded
1/2 Cup Sliced Almonds
3 to 4 Green Onions
1 Package Chicken Top Ramen Noodles (Cooked)

Cut chicken into small pieces. Cook almonds on a cookie sheet in pre-heated 350 degree oven for 10 minutes or until the almonds are lightly browned (toasted). Mix with chicken and other main ingredients then add the sauce and chill.

Sauce Ingredients:
3 TBSP Rice Vinegar
1/4 Cup Sesame Oil
1/4 Cup Salad Oil (I used Canola)
1 TSP Salt
2 TBSP Sugar
Seasoning pack from the Top Ramen

Well, that's about it for now. I am home and in front of the computer. Working on the next group of stitch guides for Peacock Alley Needlepoint (August 1 & 2) in Ada, MI.

Happy Father's Day to everyone. I miss my dad. He was a very talented man... gone from this earth way too soon.

Hugs, Robin

Hi Everybody... Robin here...

Sorry (again!) for the long silence. Since last we chatted, I've traveled to The Nimble Needle-Atlanta and taught 3 days of Canvas Enhancement classes. This time there were no pre-written stitch guides; just coming up with threads and stitches on the fly. What a fun time we had.

Here are just a few of the 18 canvases with their thread selections which were at The Nimble Needle-Atlanta.

Once stitched, "Poppy" by Amanda Lawford (AL 1867) is going to be applied to the outside of a Black Travel Tote. Very stylish, Eloise.

Peg is going to have the best time stitching this Sandra Gilmore canvas, "La Vue."

Sharon won the Travel Trophy. She lives in the Orlando area and drove to Atlanta to take the class. I was truly honored! She brought one of my favorite canvases by Charley Harper, "Pumpkin Cat" (HC-P169).

Barbara was all prepared to do endless French Knot and Colonial Knots for the entire "Sheep" (by Sandra Gilmore) until I gave her a different approach for the Sheep's Body. We will save those stitches for the Head area; will also do the Gathered Stitch... one of my favorites.

Becky's new tray is going to be Fab-ulous once the "Red Pear Pillow" by Alice Peterson (AP2445) is stitched. We have her well on her way for Pears, Leaves, and Background stitches.

Jean selected a new canvas from Hilary Jean Designs. We had fun selecting backgrounds and other stitch areas.

Taffy will become Atlanta's newest Silk Ribbon expert as she works through the "Iron Gate" by Sandra Gilmore (SG-18-606).

Last one in our review, but no means the least, was Jenne's "Mystery of Missing Migrants" canvas by Charley Harper (CH-M101). First, we established an over-all wing approach for the smaller birds. Then, we discussed some background options. Finally, we tackled the big guys in the front of the pack.

"Potluck" by Charley Harper and Penny B.

Hi Everybody... Robin here...

Penny Boswinkle was in my recent class at The Nimble Needle-Atlanta. It was good seeing her again.

We do have fun in class. Bouncing stitching ideas off each other. I can honestly say I learn from her, too.

Penny is also fearless; shutters from no stitch, thread, or canvas mesh... she even stitches on black.

In April 2014, Penny selected a Charley Harper canvas called "Potluck" for her canvas enhancement class. The canvas features an animal interested in some pottery... and lots of black for the night sky.

"Potluck" by Charley Harper
(CH-P102)

Here's what Charley Harper said about this canvas...
"Every meal is potluck for an animal in the wild. So when the Coatimundi eats out (as he always does), he'll try anything on the menu. If it creeps, crawls, hops, slithers, squirms, swims, flies, walks, runs or takes root, he'll sample it. Poke around the pueblo with your pliant proboscis, roll some rocks over with your powerful paws, and you'll uncover some esoteric edibles, and some mighty fast food. You know the kind -- grab a bite before it grabs you."–– Charley Harper
I wrote the stitch guide, and Penny took off like a trouper.

So in July 2014 (yes, last week), Penny brought in her finished (!) "Potluck" from the April 2014 class. That's 3 months, folks!

I am beyond thrilled with the results.

When I was writing the stitch guide, I had a "hmmm.... I wonder..." moment. I did some research to see what kind of animal the Coatimundi was. Thanks to the internet, I was able to find some information about the Coatimundi and noticed his foot prints.

Coatimundi

I thought to myself: they MUST be incorporated into the background. I found the perfect Brenda Hart background for visual interest. Doing the happy dance, I then charted the foot prints and included them in the instructions. Hopefully the stitcher would see my vision.

So, in the April class, it was Penny's turn for the stitch guide consultation. (I almost couldn't contain the secret.) Penny read through the guide. She stopped and looked at me. I looked at Penny. We both burst with glee! Beaded FOOTPRINTS! Oh, how fun.

To date, "Potluck" is one of my most favorite Charley Harper pieces. The man was brilliant.

So without any further fanfare... I present "Potluck" by Charley Harper (HC-P102); expertly stitched by Penny Boswinkle. Stitch guide available from Robin King.

Hi Everybody... Robin here...

Today I am traveling to Peacock Alley Needlepoint in Ada, Michigan for 2 days of Canvas Enhancement classes: August 1 & 2, 2014.

Heading back to the Mitten State

Blog readers will remember all of the good times I had there last year. I'm so fortunate to be asked to return again.

This time there were 9 stitch guides to write, and Peacock Alley Needlepoint has pulled the threads. We will have two days devoted to stitch development and all things for the love of needlepoint.

Let's look and see which canvases will be in the class...

5 new stitch guides by Robin King

4 new stitch guides by Robin King

There are two Melissa Shirley canvases, as well as a Machelle Somerville canvas, a Melissa Prince canvas, a EWE & Eye canvas, a Sandra Gilmore canvas,  a Charley Harper canvas,  a Birds of a Feather canvas, and the classic Lee's Needle Arts canvas. Quite a wonderful assortment.

Look at the colorful threads pulled for "Second Chances" by Machelle Somerville. There will be beads added for a little bling, too. Pretty Peacock-y colors, wouldn't you agree?

Machelle is the General Manager at Peacock Alley Needlepoint, as well as one of the hottest designers in needlepoint today. You can see her canvas line at Fleur de Paris.

I will take photos and will post them upon my return. It is fun seeing these canvases come to life.

Hi Everybody... Robin here...

The "Cone of Silence" has been lifted. The models have been stitched. The stitch guides have been written. I am pleased to let the Blog readers know the Towne Square Club is ready for its reveal. This is a collaborative effort by Ruth Schmuff from Bedecked & Beadazzled with stitch guides by Robin King.

Cue the dreamy way-back music...

A long time ago... the youthful "Ruthie" asked Robin to stitch models and write the stitch guides for her latest project: a needlepoint village. Robin was honored to be asked, took on the task, and entered the "Cone of Silence."

But then, Robin got busy. Her stitching on the village continued, but also taught at TNNA, edited/produced DVDs for Tony Minieri & Amy Bunger, began traveling and teaching at needlepoint stores, began writing stitch guides for customers, and tended to her cats.

The months turned into years. Ruthie was very, very patient. Finally, the last stitch was made. The last word was typed. Robin stepped out of the "Cone of Silence." The Towne Square Club is ready.

Here are some photos of the finished pieces as seen on Ruth's blog, It's not your Grandmother's Needlepoint along with her commentary... and some of mine.

Love the tiny details. The roof on the book store is an open book.
The gallery is lined with colored pencils.

There is a shoe store and a handbag store.
Note: the clever laces made from silk ribbon on the shoe store.

The wine shop and the flower shop.
You know we need a good bottle of wine, and flowers, beautiful flowers.
Note: the grapes were so easy and 3D with "messy" beading.

Do you need a snack?
Ice cream and chocolate should be close at hand.

What about knitting and quilting, can't leave those out.
Note: look at the real knitting needles.
Also, the tomato pin cushion was felted.

Of course, no home is complete without a pet; nor is an village.
Kittens and puppies and bunnies, oh my!

The needlepoint store is the heart of the village.
Your address can be added here, too.

The Towne Square Club begins shipping in October 2014. There are 12 shipments, and on the 6th and 12th months, you will get a second shop at half price. Give Ruth a call. Everyone loves to receive a package in the mail... especially from Bedecked & Beadazzled.

Well, that's about it for now. Need to check on the other projects which need tending... and the cats, too.

Until the next time... HUGS, Robin

Hi Everybody... Robin here...

Before I take off to teach this weekend at Beth's Needlepoint Nook in Louisville, KY... I MUST finish up with my wonderful time at Peacock Alley Needlepoint last month.

Where did the time go? (I know the answer! Writing the 12 stitch guides for this weekend's class.)

The 2-day event at Peacock Alley Needlepoint was so much fun! You know Sandy is a wonderful hostess: even her tongs match the store's namesake.

Peacock Alley Needlepoint serves up a good time.

Sandy and her gals, Machelle, Holly and Jenny were on hand for the Thursday evening Meet & Greet; complete with yummy hors d'oeuvres, etc.

Hi Everybody... Robin here...

I'm back home from teaching at Beth's Needlepoint Nook in Louisville, KY and will have a blog entry devoted to my wonderful time there, soon!

I'm also getting my "ducks in a row" for teaching next month at Needle Nook of La Jolla and at The Nimble Needle-Atlanta.

I didn't want too much time to pass as I go radio silent; here's a must-read blog for you.

Susan Elliott writes the "Plays with Needles" blog. Please check it out! Susan is one of the most talented, inventive, life-loving people I know. (We've never met, but I've admired her for many years!) You will be amazed at her needle art. Brilliant.

Check out her blog from yesterday titled, "Eighteen and Falling." She talks about her son, Jack and his birthday celebration.

Oh, my!

I'll be back soon. Until then... Hugs!  Robin

Hi Everybody... Robin here...

Hope you are enjoying these nice October days.

I've been "blog silent" getting ready for my two upcoming Canvas Enhancement class destinations, but this morning I wanted to tell you about my wonderful time spent teaching at Beth's Needlepoint Nook in Louisville, KY a few weeks ago.

What's that saying... Getting there is half the battle? My flight was delayed getting out of Memphis due to persistent thunder/lightening storms which made me miss my connection flight to Louisville. However, the Louisville flight was also delayed getting out of ATL. I hoofed it from Terminal A to Terminal E to the very last gate (E3). The plane was still there, but they had given away my seat. Luckily, the gate attendant didn't give up, and did find a way to get me on "my" flight. My luggage arrived on the next flight to Louisville. It was a fancy plane; I played Sudoko.

From ATL to Louisville

At Beth's Needlepoint Nook, our Canvas Enhancement class featured these canvases by Zecca, Danji, Laurel Burch, Sandra Gilmore (x4), Strictly Christmas (x2), Ruth Schmuff, that famous "No Name Chicken" and a lovely tribute to Sammy, the Keeshond.

New stitch guides by Robin King

The threads had already been pulled/kitted; let the stitching begin!

Jan B. selected the Amish Hanging Quilts. I had just learned the Peruvian Loop stitch, and wanted to share it with her for the Clothes Line pole. (You know me... I'm the See One, Do One, Teach One gal.) I also showed her how to make the Colonial Running Roses using Silk Ribbon. What fun effects!

Everyone received a Beth's Needlepoint Nook magnet.

The Home Haunted Home had teachable moments, too. My favorite Twisted Lazy Daisy stitch was used on the Pumpkin Stem. Love that 3D effect!

Twisted Lazy Daisy is a must know stitch.

Friday night the class all went out to dinner. Good food and conversation. What a fun group of ladies.

Beth was the perfect hostess. Look at my welcome basket and pretty flowers.

Southern hospitality

The two days went so quickly. Why does time in the Needlepoint world move at such warp speeds?

Our snacks during class were home-made delicacies; a collaborative effort from Beth's ladies. Jena M. made these wonderful Blue Cheese Crackers. She gave me permission to include the recipe.

Blue cheese crackers

10 to 12 ounces crumbled blue cheese
3/4 cup soft butter
2 cups flour
1 cup finely chopped pecans (I bake the nuts for about 7 minutes in a 350 degree oven; toasting them this way brings out the flavor)
1/2 to 1 teaspoon cayenne

Cream cheese and butter together. Toss the flour, nuts and cayenne together, then add to cheese mixture and mix well.
Roll into 1 or 2 logs. Refrigerate until chilled or freeze until you need them, then slice 1/4 inch thick and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until toasty. Makes about 4 dozen.

These go really well with wine!

My hotel was right next door to Barnes & Noble Bookstore. Each evening I walked over and treated myself to a decaf Pumpkin Spice Latte (don't hold the Whip!)

Yum!

The cool weather (yes, KY weather is usually 10+ degrees cooler than Memphis) was a welcome change.

The Chamber of Commerce weather package
was ordered  for my September visit.

As I was packing up my things getting ready for the flight back to Memphis, Beth gave me an extra surprise: a Derby-Pie to bring home. It was frozen and traveled great. We had Derby-Pie for a week. What a treat!

The one and only Derby-Pie from Louisville, KY
Chocolate Nut Pie

It was nice being back in Kentucky. Looking forward to my next visit at Beth's Needlepoint Nook.

Today I'm packing and getting ready to travel again. This time: teaching a Canvas Enhancement class at Needle Nook of La Jolla in California. (Oh, somebody please pinch me!)

It will be fun to tell you all about that trip... the next time. Here's hoping for a smooth uneventful flight. Until then... HUGS, Robin

Hi Everybody... Robin here.

Happy Thanksgiving to each of you.

On this holiday, I am taking time to blog. Yes, blog.... to catch you up on what's been going on since the last time we were together.

Step into the Wayback Machine with me...  as we visit October 10-11, 2014.

October 10-11, 2014 ... Needle Nook of La Jolla

I had been asked to teach a canvas enhancement class at Needle Nook of La Jolla.

Needle Nook of La Jolla has 2 stores:
The Canvas Studio and The Thread  Gallery

What an honor. The store is a leader in the needlepoint community: great website, knowledgeable staff and management, and home to their brilliant resident teacher David McCaskill. And, did I mention it was in La Jolla, CA?

I've always heard about the wonderful weather in Southern California; the inspiration to many songs.

And look at this view. The Pacific Ocean was right there!

Palm Trees and succulents.

10 canvases were on the dossier from these wonderful designers: Zecca, Ruth Schmuff, Dream House Ventures, Barbara Fox, Kirk & Bradley, Maggie Co, Melissa Shirley Designs, and Treglown Designs/Charley Harper.

new stitch guides by Robin King

The color copies had been given to me ahead of time and I was able to plan stitch & thread suggestions.

It is always fun to see the threads pulled and the stitches come to life. Look at the wall of threads in the Needle Nook of La Jolla's Thread Gallery!

I was scurrying from one student to the next. I didn't get to take as many photos as I would have liked to take. Here's a few...

Needle Nook of La Jolla is directly across from a delightful restaurant, The Cottage. Those of you who have followed my travels know I enjoy starting the day with an "eggy" breakfast. The Cottage is the grand-prize winner. What a treat!

Breakfast at The Cottage with Rosanne

Here's Rosanne (the talented and terrific manager at Needle Nook of La Jolla) who had the "stuffed" French Toast. You can see my "eggy" breakfast in the foreground. Epically delicious.

I had the best time teaching at Needle Nook of La Jolla and look forward to the next time. Many thanks to Fay, David, and Rosanne for this opportunity.

It's time to set the Wayback Machine to another day where I met a new upcoming needlepoint artist. See you soon.

Until then, Hugs!   Robin

Hi Everybody... Robin here...

Look for our ad in the Nov/Dec 2014 Needlepoint Now

One of the many hats I've worn is producing the "How'd You Do That?" needlepoint DVDs. Pet Project Video is the name of our company. It is a joint venture between myself, Amy Bunger (Amy's Golden Strand) and Pat Ryan (Business Visuals).

All of the DVDs are still available through your Local/Favorite Needlepoint shops; shops can order from our Wholesalers.

    Hi Everybody... Robin here.

So sorry to be so long for blogging. I've been crazy swamped: writing stitch guides for the next teaching destination. Just as soon as one event is over... I have to rev-up the creative brain RPMs and do it all again.

Just when I think... Hey, let's update the blog... day turns into night turns into the wee hours of the day...

So. What brings me here now?  at 1:19AM?

I finally updated the recent Stitch Guides page of those new 58 guides I've written in 2015.

Click on the "Stitch Guides by Robin King" Tab and you can see all of the new ones listed as now available.

Those which say coming soon! are for an upcoming event, and as soon as the event is over, those guides will be available, too.

    Here's the link:

A lot of my weekly activity is posted on my Facebook page, but I realize not everyone is on Facebook. I really do need to do a better job blogging.

I have missed you and hope all are doing fine. Would love to know what you're stitching...

Here's a stitch for you, too.

Until the next time... HUGS!  Robin

    Rhodes Heart 21 x 18 diagram

    $

    Hi everybody... Robin here...

Today I was charting a Rhodes Heart to specifically fit the Heart design for a sweet little canvas, "To My Valentine" by Fiori (F-3639).

"To My Valentine" by Fiori (F-3639)
    Dream House Ventures
part of the Fiori Valentines Garland Club
    offered thru The Nimble Needle-Atlanta

I enjoy charting stitch diagrams. I could have just provided my "generic" Rhodes Heart 8x8 and let the stitcher figure out the numbering sequence, but I wanted to do more.

The Fiori Valentines Garland Club is offered thru The Nimble Needle-Atlanta. Stacy, the owner, did a great job selecting the stitches for the 5 canvases in the series. Each model is stitched to perfection. They are just the right size to be hung together in a garland... or imagine on a white wreath or white tree. Love!

You can read more about the Fiori Valentines Garland Club on The Nimble Needle-Atlanta website.

Here's the link: Fiori Valentines Garland Club

Today's Heart has these dimensions: 21 threads width and 18 threads height.

Working over the original diagram, I set up the grid.

Then I started to lay the stitches onto the artwork in the computer... just as if I was stitching with needle and thread.

I changed each stitch to a different color so I could see the progression.

The last step was to remove the red Heart and to add the stitching sequence numbers.

Voilà! The Rhodes Heart 21x18 is complete; numbered and to scale.

Try this on other Rhodes Hearts you might run across. Crayons, colored pencils, markers are fun to use if you aren't in front of the computer.

Until the next time... HUGS!  Robin
